when the heart fails and over
fills with disappointment rake
leaves in the backyard;
gather them in large green bags
stamp down to make more room
gather more and keep from the wind;
tie carefully with wire to prevent
spillage and going over the same ground;
since burning is forbidden load up the car.
at the landfill the gulls mill
and gawk waiting. this trip
will not please them. there is nothing to eat.
